Slightly inferior Kurosawa anyway.

The premise itself is quite funny, and there are certainly plenty of fascinating scenes. But Kurosawa's invasion film is not so much about aliens, but about humanity. He abuses the format a bit to tell something about humanity, but those two things don't come together very well.

On the one hand because the film is a bit too light-hearted in tone, and on the other hand because it is just too thick and Kurosawa doesn't have much interesting to say in that area. There is some typical whining about work and love, but it is certainly not very insightful.

Visually nice, but there too it shows that Kurosawa is actually not that kind of director. He just does a better job as a drama director. The film itself remains interesting, it is quirky and idiosyncratic enough for that, but 2 hours is quite long and the mix that Kurosawa tries to present here does not always work well.

3.0*

To be honest, I was a bit disappointed. Nevertheless, a film with the necessary potential. The opening scene, for example, promised a lot of good things and had a kind of Sci-Fi thriller in it. Unfortunately this was not enough. What follows are some drawn-out aimless scenes where thoughts are stolen. Quite repetitive in nature so that it became a bit boring, especially to continue this for 130 minutes.

However, I was “into” the story and was still fascinated by the plot until halfway through. But eventually it all petered out and lost my attention. Acting performance is up to standard. The tone of the film is rather light-hearted and even comical, certainly not something to take seriously. All things considered, just not...

Rarely have the preparations for an alien invasion been more laconic than in Before we vanish. The aliens do not make a point of sharing their plans and the people who are informed do not panic at all but even cooperate. Gives a funny effect, because as a viewer you are misled. . In the meantime, there is of course a certain social criticism, but it is not very strong. It is mainly the strange story that makes Before we vanish worthwhile.
