United States, the 1970s. The film follows the highly intelligent Jack over a period of 12 years and follows the murders that define Jack's development as a serial killer. Nice.

With von Trier it is always a matter of waiting. I like some of his movies, others don't appeal to me. On paper, The House That Jack Built didn't seem too interesting, but luckily it turned out differently.

The shocking part is not that bad, but you also know who you are dealing with. Some scenes would indeed not look out of place in the heavier horror works and the tone of the film often also makes it a bit harder, at the same time there is also a lot of room for humor. Although that may only make it worse for the light-sensitive person.

Visually it is a mix of von Trier's experiments. Sometimes hyper-styled, sometimes Dogme-esque. Acting is also surprisingly good, not a big Dillon fan but what he shows here is neat. Only the soundtrack is on the poor side.

A bit too interesting towards the end (and I don't mean the epilogue by that, but the conversations between Jack and Verge), but that also makes it typical von Trier and also gives the film its own face.

4.0* and a detailed review.

Finally, an intelligent film that encourages thinking and indeed invites discussion. A pleasant surprise in the exhausted majority in which visual perception tries to cover up the wafer-thin content without a chance.

The House That Jack Built is not for the faint of heart. The violence tastes palpably uncomfortable and is at times astonishingly real in a voyeuristic, inescapable way. No Hollywood beauties or finery here. Instead, people juggle hard facts that are unceremoniously rammed into your retina like sledgehammer blows.

Von Trier forces the viewer to see a dark mirror of humanity that is as gruesome as it is topical. However, judging this film solely on violence is too short-sighted. If you did, you would miss the essence and the intrinsic paradox that balances on a fragile rope between genius and insanity.

Under the brutally drenched violence you will find unprecedented purity in the intellectual conversations or battle between Jack and Verge (Virgil). You marvel at the striking references and the simple - albeit complexly shrill - truths that are exposed. Dillon is peerless as the OCD-sufferer, experimenting serial killer who finds himself increasingly entangled in a downward spiral - producing bizarrely hilarious and simultaneously horrific moments.

All that remains is the filmmaker. Von Trier is a headstrong man who is averse to concessions. You have to like his style. One describes it as pretentious nonsense; in another it delights the challenge-hungry neurons. This allorgy intrigued me from the beginning to the - phenomenally beautifully rendered - end. It was feasting with an insatiable appetite for more. In my opinion, Von Trier's best yet.

masterly.

The designation 'provocateur' does not do Lars von Trier enough credit in this regard. It's a genius shin kicker. With a straight leg on everything inside and outside the film itself. A tough tackle on the outdated rules of film and a vicious elbow on the nose of the critics who take the whistle. It is as often hilarious as it is horrifying. A unique one.
