A miracle happened in Brazil in the 1950s. Renowned modern art museums opened their doors to artists that no one had ever heard of. Many critics pointed out that they were exhibitions of the best Brazilian painters of the century. It was written that this explosion of art and beauty was a sign that something similar to the Renaissance was happening in Rio de Janeiro. Behind this miracle was not an art school, boss or gallery owner, but a psychiatrist, ridiculed by her colleagues. She refused to treat schizophrenia with electroshock therapy and encouraged patients to practice art instead.
