I was a bit disappointed, the story about her struggle for the separation of church and state seemed very interesting to me, but we really don't get to see much of it. Instead, we mainly get a half-baked comedy that mainly focuses on her kidnapping. The cast doesn't do a bad job but Madalyn Murray O'Hair is portrayed as a caricature in a pretty bad wig. Too bad, because it can hardly be taken seriously in this way. At the end it gets a bit exciting, but this film could have been much more interesting than the simple kidnapping story it is now. A small enough.

I didn't know the story let alone ever heard of Madalyn Murray O'Hair. This movie has been in my list on Netflix for a while, today I finally got to watch it.

The life story of Madalyn Murray O'Hair is beautifully presented. Her relationship with her parents, her eldest son and the school provide a good introduction to her as a person.
I also thought it was smart that it seemed as if the main character in the film actually sat on the couch with David Letterman, among others. That also gave me a 'Forrest Gump moment'.

As the movie progresses, the kidnapping became more and more important. I would have liked to see some more elements about her as a person.

I had never heard of this lady, in that respect it is interesting to see her life story in a film like this. You get a bit of an idea of the fight against religion in public space in the US. The lady herself was apparently quite witty, which makes for one funny moment. Good role by Leo, who I otherwise only knew from the Treme series, where she plays a completely different role. It is also interesting to see the development of her eldest son who corresponds to the stereotypical image of a child who rebels against his fanatical parent(s) and adopts an opposing mindset.

It is also interesting to see that you can apparently also earn a lot of money with atheism. I always thought that was reserved for religions, see Scientology for example, but also the many television preachers in the US, but apparently atheists can also make a profit.

Apart from the main character, does this really make for a memorable movie? Unfortunately not really. Interesting because atheism doesn't often appear in a movie, but nothing more than that. 2*.
