Melancholic drama about the bitterness of life and the failure to realize ambitions. A naive young man goes to Paris with the hope of an acting career. Through various events he instead gradually descends into the environment of gay prostitution. A strange world is set up around his character with a frustrated landlady, a whore, transvestites and an old gay who is also the presenter of a cultural TV program. You have to like it because Téchiné is really not for everyone; I was not too keen on it but Manuel Blanc's performance is one that I did appreciate.

A homeless person ends up in the big city. My life might have taken a completely different turn if I had seen this film at the time, because just a few years earlier I had suddenly ended up in Amsterdam from a village in Friesland. Parallels galore, although I had the security of a place to live and an income, and I was not as naive as one of my later girlfriends who saw a sign hanging in the red light district 'room: 100 guilders' and thought that the housing shortage in the city was not that bad.

It's a bit of a shame that this kind of story always seems to be told from the point of view of the heathen - wouldn't it be much more interesting to turn that around. Comparable perhaps to vampire movies, when is Dracula the main character, has no one ever thought of that?

And it's a pity that Noiret has such a small role - and yet he pulls the film towards him, more than Blanc or Bėart. What a brilliant actor he was, and no role too small.
