"When a grudge from the dead passes to the living - Who is safe?"
When volunteer Nishina Rika visits a bedridden elderly woman, she discovers a mysterious door sealed with tape. Nishina can't contain her curiosity and she opens the door. A strange, dark spirit is able to escape through this and casts an evil curse on the visitors of the house: everyone who enters the house is killed in suspicious circumstances. This has not escaped the attention of the Tokyo police and the detectives are opening an investigation. This leads them to a murder committed in the house years ago. A man killed his wife there, but the couple's son was never found.

I hate this movie so much. After seeing him 6 years ago, it's still very obvious when the scary moments are going to happen and every time I say to myself 'she's just a scary looking actress' but when I look at her for more than a few seconds terrified stare, I can't help but look away. With a tiny budget and some very cheap moments (the zombie girls are really bad), the film really manages to be deadly scary with flying colors.
The US version focuses more on cheap scares, where it's that obvious tension of when something is going to happen. There isn't much time to feel something for the main characters in that respect either, since people all die very quickly in a way that we can't see. Anyway, I have a lot now want to watch the second movie soon.

It's great that a film that was made with relatively limited resources and with little trickery manages to evoke an almost constant atmosphere of doom and threat.
Most scenes are filmed coldly and soberly. Cleverly used closeups and well-placed evocative camera shots visually evoke feelings of fear and grubbyness and discomfort. Exciting.
There is little background music. The lack of it and the occasional presence of it creates uncertainty. The viewer has little to hold on to. The focus is on the situations in the picture, which can explode at any moment, without musical advance notice. The result is even more tension.
Couple of timed jumpscares, but not over the top. Within the tight layer of tension that lies almost continuously over the film, every unexpected movement or crazy facial expression of the characters is enough for a startle reaction.
The limited budget does take its revenge here and there. For example, the wrong subjects and the erroneous facts they perform ultimately disappoint because of the poor graphical effects. The grime and the excellent acting do a lot, but better effects could have provided a little more variety in the anxious moments. The run-up to a scene and the elaboration of the scene regularly show similarities with earlier scenes. Now it is not the case that such a scene immediately becomes annoying. Oh, no. It is more that recognition arises and that thus the surprise effect decreases. That's a pity.
They are small minuses versus many pluses.
Exciting film.
