Dead Man plot

"No one can survive becoming a legend."

Bill Blake travels to a nineteenth-century pioneer town for a job as a bookkeeper only to find that he is unwanted. When he accidentally kills the son of a powerful manufacturer in a gunfight the same day, he is instantly an outlaw, chased by a posse of bounty hunters. Mortally wounded, and assisted by a literate Native American who, because of his name, mistook him for the English seer-poet William Blake, he murderously drags himself through the Wild West in self-defense towards his redeeming sunset.

In the beginning, that languid atmosphere in black and white is still nice. The electric guitar playing also brings a lot of atmosphere. But after a while the slowness starts to stand out, scenes are unnecessarily long and that guitar tune really starts to get on the nerves. Jarmusch overplays his hand with this and at a certain point doesn't know how to stop.

What started well ended in a minor key and I was only too happy to turn off the movie because I couldn't hear a second of that guitar.

2.5*

Lately I've been catching up a bit for Jarmusch and I can already decide that he's not my type of director. Almost all his films have that bizarre absurd side that I can hardly place. It soon became clear that this was no ordinary western. Quite a strong start with characterful scenes in that atmospheric black and white.

The plot slowly gets weirder and, unfortunately, attracted me less and less. Admittedly a nice role by Depp, although I didn't get much height from his character: a lanky who still shouldn't be underestimated, as it turns out...

The soundtrack was nice, but a bit repetitive. The film was quite atmospheric, partly due to the beautiful images. The other characters also did their thing, characteristic that they were.
