Strong drama, in which Irons plays a wonderful role as a symbol for the Polish government and their politics. 3.5*

Strong political allegory on the Polish political climate around 1982. Jeremy Irons' role represents the communist regime and the three Polish workers the Solidarity movement. The simple story of Polish workers who illegally go to England for a month to refurbish a house for their boss offers many opportunities to shed light on various political aspects. The way the regime oppresses the people, keeps them in the dark and abuses power for its own interests are examples of this. Even without the political layer, it is a beautiful film, with a number of beautiful scenes, including the opening scene and the scene in which the strong playing Jeremy Irons threatens to lose himself and starts to hallucinate. ****

Excellent film about a couple of Polish illegal migrant workers who redecorate a house in London. The film is set at the end of 1981 and is a beautiful time document. The circumstances in which the men find themselves are well worked out. Jeremy Irons carries the film with ease as the only English-speaking migrant who tries to make ends meet in every possible way (which results in many good scenes).
