Great film with an excellent Matthew McConaughey in a very (unknown) well-constructed story with sufficient variety of dramatic and action-packed scenes where the story never becomes too heavy and corny at any time. Nice work! The setting is beautiful and everything is beautifully portrayed. The references to racism are nicely woven into the story. A film that just entered the top 10 of the year. 8/10

Facts and fables.

Making a film biography about the controversial Newton Knight is difficult, partly because the historians tumble over each other with facts and fables. And what actually drove the deserting soldier in his decisions during the American Civil War is unknown. Interesting, but the film doesn't always come out well. It also doesn't help that the occasional jump to a story in the more present tense is, strangely enough, secondary. At least, too little attention is paid to it to be able to claim a leading role towards the end.

It is not the only strange taste that this historical drama leaves in the mouth. Still, Free State of Jones easily bites away. Thanks in part to Matthew McConaughey, who knows exactly how to chop with such an axe. You forgive him the clichés and such. Even the staged romance that is rather forced in, you take into the bargain as a viewer. All because Free State of Jones knows how to entertain more than enough. The acting is fine, the setting atmospheric and the rhythm pleasant. Although it all remains a bit too light-hearted and unfortunately things collapse a bit towards the end.

Good.

Thanks to Entertainment One for the review copy.

hmm.

So far the least Ross film I've seen, and with this one the counter is also 3. I actually believe the rest of his films. Obviously Ross wanted to continue this project, but in the end he just wants too much.

McConaughey is doing well again. I always find him an actor with charm, and here he is again handsome in the lead. He knows how to carry the film. Ali also deserves to be mentioned here. Pretty good performance.

The movie opens well. The war is actually right there, without any introduction of the characters. In fact, the introduction is only done after that. It does manage to captivate because of that, because it does bring you well into the film.

Although the pace is a bit too slow, the film manages to captivate for the most part. There are unnecessary side issues, the future court for example. Just leave it out. And Ross wants a little too much with his movie. He just puts too much into it. He should have focused mainly on 1 event.

The movie could have been a little louder. There are a few serious cases that pass by, but actually without impact. Above all, I would have liked to feel a little more war, to better feel the threat of the period. It was set up well in the beginning.

But in the end a reasonable film with sometimes atmospheric images and a great performance in the lead role. He has a pass, but not a high one.
