"A lady never reveals her tactics."
The story is set around 1790, when the beautiful widow Lady Susan Vernon travels to her in-laws' estate. There she wants to put an end to the colorful rumors about her amorous escapades that are circulating in the better circles. Once there, she decides to look for a husband for herself and her rather reluctant daughter Frederica.

How terribly boring and stiff. I see absolutely no humor in this. What unnatural dialogues and what superficial characters this film has... Kate Selene Beckinsale put on your vampire suit quickly, instead of wasting your and my time making such crap.

The cool, slightly ironic style of director Whit Stillman fits perfectly with the film adaptation of this Jane Austen story. Kate Beckinsale is also great in the cunning lead role. However, the show is stolen by Tom Bennett, hilarious here as the sympathetic but stupid rich bastard that Beckinsale has set her sights on. It all doesn't amount to much and there is little that we haven't seen before and better in previous Austen film adaptations, but the subtle humor and occasional venom are refreshing.

I have to say I quite liked it for once and I like the acting, but I didn't find it very gripping or compelling and I couldn't follow it well. I like the image, the clothes and the colors. I didn't find the comic tone funny, but I liked the light-hearted style. A small pass (6). 3*
