China in the 9th century. Nie Yinniang, the 10-year-old daughter of a general, is kidnapped by a nun who initiates her into the world of martial arts. Nie Yinniang is transformed into an exceptional hit man who takes out cruel and corrupt local governors. One day, failing in her mission, she is sent back to her native land by her mistress, with orders to kill the man she was promised - a cousin who now runs the largest military region in northern China. After 13 years of exile, the young woman must confront her parents, her memories and her long-suppressed feelings. Nie Yinniang, who slavishly follows her mistress's orders, will now have to choose: sacrifice the man she loves or break forever from the sacred path of the righteous murderers.

I don't quite know what to do with this. It is nice to see all court culture in the film. Lots of detail in the customs, objects and decoration. and there are also many beautiful pictures to see. This does not apply to everything, by the way, some shots were so grainy that they reminded me of an exploitation film. Because of the long shots, everything is also very slow. Added to this the fact that several scenes do not seem to be coherent with the overarching story, due to the long duration I lost the thread. at first I liked that there was almost no music to be heard, and the background sounds spoke for themselves. However, I started to miss something later, because of those long scenes. Incidentally, a significant break in style is made later by suddenly placing electric music under a fight. A bit strange. It is also striking that not a single drop of blood can be seen in the realistically shot film. I would like to hear why this film is so great, and how it was possible that it was so successful at Cannes.

Disappoint this for a while. I didn't find it enchanting and visually clever. The different image format offers no added value for me. Some images are not sharp and even grainy. The beautiful color palette is vaguely present. It is also a bit disappointing in terms of the beautiful locations. I've seen quite a few better ones in this genre that came across as stunning. I didn't have that here. Sometimes even the impression that certain scenes really look too made. You will also be left hungry here in terms of action scenes. A lot more spectacle expected. Not that this is a disaster, but the film also disappoints in terms of story. All very vague and above all very boring to the viewer. Sometimes it was even a struggle to get through. An insufficient which I did not expect at all. 4/10

Wow, I had different expectations for this. I found it difficult to get into the film, so I quickly gave up on the content. At a certain point a lot of names pass by, so I lost it completely.

Fortunately, I was able to recharge myself cinematographically with the film. Beautiful colorful images of the dynasty and nature. Great camera work and tight direction. It looks beautiful at times. Much attention is also paid to the functioning of the state and dynasty or the renegade provinces, but anyone who expects it all to be more spectacular will return from a barren journey. Mediocre.
