'Prince' (2015) is a bit like the video clip 'Drink & Drugs' by Lil Kleine & Ronnie Flex: it seems to bite harder than it does in the end, while its randomness apparently appeals to the imagination of large groups of youngsters . Sam de Jong is aware of the video clip-like style of directors such as Nicolas Winding Refn and Harmony Korine, but he then uses it just a little too little to deal blows with the material.Refn/Korine provoke; they poke where it chafes; they force the viewer to at least take a position towards what they display on screen disgustingness. If De Jong is already coloring outside the safe lines, then mainly because he makes 'dry jokes' about characters who spit, puke, poke heroin injections in their veins and chew nuts in a dirty way all the time (?). The masterly premise - a Moroccan-Dutch boy with a white mother/sister - degenerates into a crazy gimmick. It's not something that makes you think (or even wants to get under your skin.)

Surprisingly quirky, stylized; it's not too often you see shots in a Dutch film that wouldn't have looked out of place in the last Refn with a little imagination. It is all the more unfortunate that some renditions constantly touch the caricatural. De Jong maintains his own stereotypes by equipping his characters with distracting mannerisms (fireworks? nuts?) and matching language. Fortunately, Prins remains intriguing, partly due to De Jong's eye for composition and the pleasant use of color (here too, this work is very reminiscent of Refn). There would have been no bitter aftertaste, were it not for the fact that the ending is rather anticlimactic and easily staged.

A very weak film about a group of young people in a deprived area. All topics are covered. Emerging love, drugs and crime. The first annoyance for me is almost immediately the dialogues. They come across as very contrived. But they are often not even intelligible. Fortunately, I soon had the impression that I didn't really miss much. The storylines are also very superficial. The film doesn't really go into any depth. A lot of scenes are also very unbelievable. Which serious criminal does his dubious business with a striking Lamborghini Diablo of which only a few are driving around in the Netherlands? The acting is also very weak. I only really appreciate my mother's taste in music. The LP from Spectral Display where she regularly plays the song "It takes a muscle to fall in love" is one of my favorite records. The rest of the soundtrack is nothing else. Lots of weak synthesizer bullshit. I really don't understand how this film has such a high rating. Dutch films are often criticized as well. But this apparently appeals to the target group.
