Not good no.

Although it is not as disastrous as the average here suggests, but it does have something to do with the story surrounding the film. In the end, this isn't that much worse than the weekday American romcom.

Expectations are a lot higher with Russell at the helm I think, the bevy of well-known names on the poster will also have contributed. That Russell ultimately did not want to connect his name to this film is not very surprising, because it has become a serious mess at times.

Visually ugly, editing is sloppy and the timing of the jokes could have been a bit better. But occasionally there is something to chuckle about, especially when the humor goes in the stupid direction. It's jokes that you often don't expect in a movie like this that still make it watchable.

It doesn't get really fun anywhere, the actors are not exactly good in their roles and it looks lousy, but there is still a successful joke left and right.

1.5*

I don't know what's worse... the 7-year and dramatic production process (google it ) or the final end result... All very bland and that's a shame since there are some nice names in the film... Only I always find tracy morgan sooooo terribly annoying... The original project could have been a good movie, but alas...

Russell's previous three films (The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle) earned him Oscar nominations. Perhaps that's why the cast of this shocking romcom/political satire thought Russell would probably be able to make something out of this. They were wrong. When the hospital refuses to operate on Alice [Jessica Biel] after a staple gun accident because she doesn't have proper health insurance, Alice seeks help from Howard Birdwell [Jake Gyllenhaal], an inexperienced candidate for the House of Representatives. She hopes to bring about a reform of the healthcare system, but clashes with Howard's mentor Pam Hendrickson [Catherine Keener], a former astronaut who wants to use Howard in her cart to get her own project off the ground. Sounds like a modern version of Mr Smith Goes To Washington, but it's actually a sacrilege that I even dare to compare this lousy written and grossly overacted rubbish with that. A morbid curiosity and a huge (and perfectly justified) flop.
