Serena plot

"Some loves can never let go."

It's 1929. Newlyweds George (Cooper) and Serena Pemberton (Lawrence) travel from Boston to the mountains of North Carolina to seek their fortune in the lumber industry. Serena is in no way inferior to the average man. She supervises the workers, hunts for rattlesnakes and even saves a man's life in the wilderness. Together, this king and queen run their own empire and will do anything to protect their current lives and future plans. When that's in jeopardy, it puts their dream marriage on the line, too.

Susanne Bier's second foray into Hollywood is a blunder. After a decent start, the film delivers a formulaic tale of scheming, jealousy and murder in a logging community. To my dismay, Jennifer Lawrence does a poor job in this film. She's either miscast or out of touch with her role.

The slow pace does give you the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful images of the Smoky Mountains, by far the best part of this film.

In 1929, lumber merchant George Pemberton [Bradley Cooper] is logging through the Smokey Mountains to make way for a railroad, but may find himself in hot water when it turns out the wilderness is being protected. George falls head over heels for Serena [Jennifer Lawrence], a young woman with a shady past who he immediately appoints as his right-hand woman. Add to the mix a local woman [Ana Ularu] who claims she is pregnant with George's child, an activist [Douglas Hodge] hell-bent on stopping the logging, and a local sheriff [Toby Jones] who has little time for big-city capitalism, and you have the makings of a soap opera-style film noir in which almost no one gets off scot-free, but where what it lacks in subtlety is more than compensated for by a strong cast and a beautiful production. Based on the book of the same name by Ron Nash, it was a huge flop.

I really wanted to watch this movie because I thought it was really good and Jennifer Lawrence is in it with Bradley Cooper, but unfortunately I didn't like it. It was absolutely not my thing. It turns out to be a very gloomy movie and I felt very depressed when I watched it (not fun). The movie has a little touch of western, and I think the movie might be fun for people who like indie movies. The acting of Lawrence and Cooper is of course fine, but the story just couldn't captivate me at all.
