Jane Got a Gun plot

Jane Hammond is an exemplary woman who is married to Bill, one of the worst men in town. When Bill turns against his own gang and one day comes home half dead with eight bullets in his back, Jane takes up a gun herself to put things in order. To save her family from ruthless gang leader John Bishop and his vengeful companions, she seeks help from Dan Frost, a gunfighter and former love of hers. That this help is coming is due to Dan's love for Jane, which is only slightly greater than the almost equally strong hatred for her badly damaged husband Bill, whom he will now have to protect for her.

Fair to good western that mainly relies on the strong role of Joel Edgerton and the breathtaking 'skyline' of New Mexico. The story doesn't exactly deserve the originality prize, but the film remained entertaining, partly due to the flashbacks that didn't bother me.

The rest of the cast also did a decent job, McGregor in an out-of-the-ordinary role (also in appearance) as a devious villain, Boyd Holbrook as his still sneaky brother and last but not least Natalie Portman as steadfast first lady.

The not too many action scenes were also decent and fit well into the whole.

Jane got a gun may not be an (absolute) topper in the genre, but partly due to the visual splendor, it is certainly worth it for western lovers.

“Me and Jane got unfinished business...”

Better than expected. Jane Got a Gun is not a rock hard Western with Clint Eastwood staring straight ahead. The film is more of a subdued, dramatic and sometimes even romantic Western about a woman who has had to do everything to survive, and on top of that has lost her daughter and sees her great love return. from the American Civil War.

It's all delivered in a realistic and raw way, and with Natalie Portman you have a strong action heroine. But as we are used to from her, she excels in the dramatic moments. Edgerton and McGregor are good too, and luckily there are plenty of action scenes in there too. It remains a Western of course.

A feminist western set in the 1870s, Jane Hammond [Nathalie Portman] decides to defend herself tooth and nail (and the title weapon, of course) against a gang that has tracked her down after a long time. The immediate cause is a shooting in which Jane's husband Bill [Noah Emmerich] was injured. As Bill is still recovering from his injuries, Jane seeks help from Dan [Joel Edgerton], but a flashback reveals why he has mixed feelings about it. Those too long and unnecessary flashbacks disrupt the dramatic build-up to the inevitable finale, which therefore feels a bit like an anti-climax.
