Great first season of Supernatural, one of the most compelling series I've seen. Conceptually, this is pretty close to The X-Files. Think of it as an X-Files light.
In addition to the overarching story, in which two brothers hunt the dangerous demon that killed their mother, creator Eric Kripke eagerly picks from many urban legends and gives them a contemporary twist. The relationship between the two completely different brothers and their father is also touched upon, although it has not yet reached the depth that the second season does. People get away with it – the foundation is laid and that often does not go without a fight. (The X-Files also had that in the first season.)
In terms of atmosphere, Supernatural loses out to its example, which is partly due to the youthful protagonists. This means that the series is also made for a slightly younger audience. Which is certainly not a downer. The stories are nice, the decoration at times excellent (Asylum is a highlight) and the humor very acceptable (although the best joke is made right in the first episode). In addition, they dare to ignore the paranormal in one episode (The Benders) – which remarkably enough results in one of the best episodes of the season. Scarecrow is also a highlight.
