Downton Abbey plot

Set in England during the pre-World War I years, the story of Downton Abbey paints a portrait of a complex community. Although the estate has been home to the noble Crawleys for many generations, it is also the place where the servants - within a strict hierarchy - spend their lives, with all their big dreams and small sides. Their motives are also very diverse. While some are loyal to Downton's family and lifestyle, others view the estate as an intermediate stage to another, better job, or as a place to find love or adventure.

Six seasons immersed in this sweet-conservative fairy tale. I can well imagine that this was a big international hit, because especially the production as a whole is the strong side of the series, you are completely absorbed in this fictional world. Unsurprisingly, creator Julian Fellowes himself is an aristocratic Tory, as the aristocrats get off just fine and there's a lot of emphasis on traditional values. Somehow it is striking that the series ended just before the Brexit referendum took place...

In addition, the cultural changes after World War I, the decline of the financially distressed upper class and the parallel emancipation of the ordinary population are quite interesting topics. Anyway, I have to admit that such a well-crafted feel-good series is suddenly quite refreshing in the midst of the more serious and dark psychological work of today.

The screenplay was the weakest point of all seasons, with several less interesting subplots spread over several episodes. Besides the Bates vicissitudes and the short romances, this mainly applied to Thomas. Seasons 4 and 5 threatened to stagnate; luckily this last season picked up again to work towards a satisfying ending.

I will of course watch those two movies. I have also become curious about the series Upstairs, Downstairs from the 1970s. That seems to be a direct predecessor in everything.
