Million Dollar Island plot

Reality program in which a hundred people have to survive for two months on an uninhabited island in the Philippines. Which islanders will last until the end, and with how much money will they leave the island? After all, there is a million euros to be made. The participants all start with a wristband worth ten thousand euros. After that, they can win and lose tapes by playing games. People who give up must give their bracelet to a straggler of their choice.

Interessant om te zien hoe heel wat maatschappelijke vraagstukken aan de orde zijn vanaf de eerste aflevering. Het begint al bij het huisje waar de deelnemers zelf hun spullen en voedsel bijeen moeten vinden. Een aantal van hen steekt spontaan de handen uit de mouwen, maar het merendeel kiest ervoor om zonder werken via 'herverdeling' in hun levensonderhoud te voorzien. Meteen krijgen we een illustratie van de zwakheden van het democratisch systeem en het deficit van de verzorgingsstaat. Het verhaal van de krekel en de mier. Maar ook de grootstedelijke problemen komen voorbij wanneer zgn. 'jongeren' tot gewelddadig plunderen overgaan. Als men dit niveau het hele seizoen had kunnen aanhouden, was dit echt een fantastische serie geweest. Met Bjorn hadden we alvast een kleurrijk en goed voorbereid personage, maar van zodra hij de serie verlaat, stort de boel in elkaar. De andere karakters konden mij immers gestolen worden en aan onnozele scoutsspelletjes heb ik een broertje dood.

Interesting to see how many social issues are addressed from the first episode. It starts at the house where the participants have to find their own things and food. A number of them spontaneously roll up their sleeves, but the majority choose to earn their livelihood without working through 'redistribution'. Immediately we get an illustration of the weaknesses of the democratic system and the deficit of the welfare state. The story of the cricket and the ant. But also the metropolitan problems come to the fore when so-called 'young people' turn to violent looting. If they could have maintained this level all season, this would have been a really fantastic series. With Bjorn we already had a colorful and well-prepared character, but as soon as he leaves the series, things collapse. After all, the other characters could be stolen from me and silly scouting games are a little brother to me.
