The Haunting of Hill House plot

In The Haunting of Hill House we follow a family that grew up in a dark house on a hill and that has left quite a few traces. They could never completely shake the curse of the house. To deal with the demons of the past, they return to the scene of the disaster. They do not do this alone, because they are assisted by an expert in the field of unexplained phenomena.

Ik was in eerste instantie niet van plan om deze serie zo snel na de release al te gaan kijken, maar door de goede recensies en mijn haat/liefde met het horrorgenre kon ik het toch niet laten. Wat mij betreft is dit een zeer geslaagde serie. De sfeer was uitstekend, de productiewaarde lag hoog en het acteerwerk was verrassend goed. Ik hoor mensen zeggen dat Huisman wat minder was dan de rest, maar dat heb ik zelf niet zo ervaren. Het grootste pluspunt van deze serie is wat mij betreft het camerawerk. Fantastisch om te zien dat series, die toch meestal vluchtig geschoten worden, ook van die filmische long-takes kan bevatten. Het minpunt van de serie vond ik de toon. Het wisselende tussen horror en tussen een familiedrama, wat in principe niet fout is, maar de verdeling was niet altijd even prettig. Er zaten afleveringen tussen waar het hele horrorelement is weggelaten en waar we enkel naar een aantal (goed gebrachte, dat wel) dialogen aan het luisteren zijn. Flanagan bevestigt dat het tweede seizoen niet over dezelfde familie zal gaan en dat lijkt mij een hele verstandige keuze.

At first I wasn't planning on watching this series so soon after its release, but the good reviews and my love/hate with the horror genre kept me going. In my opinion, this is a very successful series. The atmosphere was excellent, the production value was high and the acting was surprisingly good. I hear people say that Huisman was less than the rest, but I have not experienced that myself. The biggest plus of this series is the camera work in my opinion. It's fantastic to see that series, which are usually shot fleetingly, can also contain those cinematic long-takes.

The downside of the series was the tone. The alternating between horror and between a family drama, which is not wrong in principle, but the division was not always pleasant. There were episodes in which the entire horror element has been left out and where we are only listening to a number of (well done, that is) dialogue.

Flanagan confirms that the second season will not be about the same family and that seems to me a very wise choice.

Prachtige drama/ horrorserie, met fraai uitgewerkte personages, mooie verhaallijnen en heel veel doodenge momenten. Ik ben al enige tijd fan van het werk van regisseur Mike Flanagan, die steevast met weinig middelen interessante films weet te maken, maar hiermee treedt hij wat mij betreft toe tot de groten der aarde. Alle afleveringen zijn de moeite waard, met amper een valse noot. Pas tegen het einde van de laatste aflevering begint de boel te slepen. Tot die tijd is het echter genieten. Eén van de betere series van de afgelopen jaren.

Beautiful drama/horror series, with beautifully developed characters, beautiful storylines and lots of scary moments. I've been a fan of the work of director Mike Flanagan for some time now, who invariably manages to make interesting films with few resources, but in my opinion, this makes him one of the greats. All episodes are worthwhile, with barely a false note. It's only towards the end of the last episode that things start to drag. Until then, however, enjoy. One of the better series of recent years.

The Haunting of Hill House is echt geniaal in elkaar gezet. Alles valt als een mooie puzzel in elkaar. Schrikmomenten aanwezig, aanwezig en nog eens aanwezig. Goede cast, uitstekend script, geloofwaardige acteerprestaties, spannend, boeiend & tegelijkertijd heel meeslepend. Eigenlijk ben ik sprakeloos. Erg onder de indruk. Wat denk je? Vijf sterren natuurlijk!

Beautiful, creepy, stylish and atmospheric! The Haunting of Hill House is really brilliantly put together. everything falls

like a beautiful puzzle. Scary moments present, present and present again. Good cast, excellent script, believable acting, exciting, captivating & at the same time very compelling. Actually I am speechless. Very impressed.
