Wolf Hall plot

In 1520, Cromwell took his first steps at court, expanding his power through cunning scheming. We get to know him as a man with a mysterious past, but also as a pragmatist who knows exactly how to use power to achieve his goals. In his loyal service to monarch and country, Cromwell sees his position threatened from several sides: by deadly political intrigue, by King Henry's wild relationship with Anne Boleyn and by the increasing social unrest caused by rebellious Protestants.

Wolf Hall season 1

For a miniseries with so many highlights (flaming acting, rock-solid atmosphere setting) it doesn't make much of an impression. It suffers from what many book adaptations weaken: staying too close to the source material; too many intrigues and sidelines that are barely worked out; too much focus on the plot and too little on the psychological development that key characters go through. This makes it feel static and summarizing instead of an overwhelming whole that is compelling from start to finish.
