Waltz plot

Willy Waltz is the director of the moribund family circus WALTZ. He rules his circus and his family with an iron fist. Although he is already old, he does not want to stop. The performance lasts as long as the performance lasts. Until the doctors diagnose him with a malignant brain tumor and Waltz must do everything in his power to ensure the survival of the circus, his life's work. But who has the capacity to succeed him? Bruno, his eldest son, is gay and will therefore not have any offspring. His second son, Felix, has a family, but is too weak to run the circus himself and the youngest, Enrico, is a loose cannon. Then there's Waltz's new Russian girlfriend who wants to take over the circus. But is there still room for the Great International World Circus WALTZ at this time?

Norbert ter Hall zet iets neer met de cinematografie en de allure van de toen opkomende HBO-krakers (The Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood). Vooral Aart Staartjes en Theo Maassen zetten onverwacht goede rollen neer, waarmee zij volledig afstappen van hun imago als respectievelijk knuffelvriend en nonchalante cabaretier. Het nadeel is dat hoge productiekosten ten koste gaat van het aantal afleveringen. Volgens mij waren de vele verwikkelingen en onderhuidse spanningen beter tot hun recht gekomen met meer afleveringen.

Norbert ter Hall creates something with the cinematography and allure of the then up-and-coming HBO squatters (The Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood). Aart Staartjes and Theo Maassen in particular play unexpectedly good roles, with which they completely abandon their image as cuddly friend and nonchalant comedian respectively. The downside is that high production costs come at the expense of the number of episodes. I think the many entanglements and subcutaneous tensions would have been better reflected with more episodes.
