The Shield started out as an entertaining, but slightly unbalanced police drama. There was never quite a balance between the emotional development of the characters in combination with current affairs. Some plot lines felt unfinished or forced. In the third season, things got a bit sharper and the focus shifted more to the consequences of the corrupt strike team. This positive development continues in this fourth season.

This time the team is still confronted with the aftermath of their money heist. They are left torn and especially Shane appears to have made his own plan. One that goes directly into Vic's. And then there's also a new commander (Glenn Close) who is enacting sweeping, controversial reforms such as drug confiscations. A major player in the criminal market is the ex-criminal-cum-preacher Antwon Mitchell, who strongly counteracts Mackey and his associates. Dutch and Claudette are still fighting with the Public Prosecution Service; Acaveda struggles with his humiliating sexual assault from last season, and Julian and partner are still at a crossroads.

This series has grown tremendously. From the somewhat cartoonish of previous seasons, they have now moved on to a realistic police drama with a criminal twist. Mackey also doesn't get away with everything anymore and his actions are increasingly turning into misadventures. The character of Glenn Close gives a good alibi why this bad cop still beats people freely. Her addition is of course also a pleasure because it is just a very nice actress in the role as bitchy kenau. Other characters outside the Strike Team are better profiled, but without gaining the upper hand in the overall storyline. Ultimately, the individual cases serve the purpose of the case against Antwon Mitchell and his relationship to the Strike Team.
