Flanagan heeft heerlijke series en films gemaakt, en ik had mij samen met de vrouw klaar gezet om met een drankje en hapje te genieten, zeker omdat hij al goede kritieken kreeg. Maar sorry dat viel ons enorm tegen, vond het totaal niet boeiend en het sprak ons helemaal niet aan, ieder zijn ding maar dit was niets voor ons....

Flanagan. Voorop: ik ben groot fan van Haunting Of Hill House en in feite is er geen Flanagan-product dat me niet kon vermaken. De man weet de sfeer altijd naar de hand te zetten. Hier is dat niet anders. De verweving van Edgar Allen Poe's korte verhaal met de rest van zijn oeuvre levert een wat bonte collectie aan personages en verhaallijnen op, waardoor het geheel wat minder compact voelt als Hill House. Ook nu wordt een familie-dynamiek centraal gesteld waarbij individuele familie-leden allemaal hun eigen stukje aandacht krijgen, grof genomen per aflevering, wat ook bij Hill House het geval was; het haakt gewoon net in iets minder lekker in elkaar als bij voorgenoemde. Gekunsteld zou ik het niet noemen, het is hoogstens wat minder organisch. Kan me niet aan het idee onttrekken dat ook de casting daar voor een groot deel debet aan is: 90% van de cast is een bekend gezicht uit eerder werk van Flanagan, en niet iedere acteur kan zijn eerdere personage ontstijgen. Sterker: het acteerwerk van sommigen blijft beneden peil en op die momenten hapert het momentum van de serie voelbaar, dat vond ik misschien wel het grootste gebrek van de serie. Niettemin Bouwt Flanagan wederom een aardig stukje sfeer op, en hoewel hij verhalend weinig verrast, weet hij de literaire elementen die Poe's werk zo aantrekkelijk maken aardig te vertalen, al legt hij soms wat opzichtig poëtische quotes in de monden van (vlakke) personages. Zeker aan het einde nemen de cryptische monologen wat de overhand, maar ik vond het nog altijd aardig te behappen. Hill House lijkt wat meer aandacht en tijd voor details gehad te hebben, wat dat betreft lijkt Flanagan hier filmisch en esthetisch wat meer op de automatische piloot te draaien, maar de man is vakman genoeg om alsnog een boeiend en sfeervol eindproduct af te leveren. 4*

First things first: I'm a big fan of Haunting Of Hill House and in fact there isn't a Flanagan product that I couldn't enjoy. The man always knows how to change the atmosphere. It is no different here.

The interweaving of Edgar Allen Poe's short story with the rest of his oeuvre produces a somewhat colorful collection of characters and storylines, making the whole feel less compact than Hill House. Once again, a family dynamic is central, with individual family members all receiving their own bit of attention, roughly speaking per episode, which was also the case with Hill House; it just fits together a little less nicely than the aforementioned. I wouldn't call it contrived, at most it is a little less organic.

I can't help but think that the casting is also largely to blame: 90% of the cast is a familiar face from Flanagan's previous work, and not every actor can transcend their previous character. In fact, the acting of some remains substandard and at those moments the momentum of the series noticeably falters, which I thought was perhaps the biggest flaw in the series.

Nevertheless, Flanagan once again builds up a nice bit of atmosphere, and although he does not surprise much narratively, he manages to translate the literary elements that make Poe's work so attractive, although he sometimes puts some ostentatious poetic quotes in the mouths of (flat) characters. Especially at the end the cryptic monologues take over, but I still found it quite enjoyable.

Hill House seems to have had a little more attention and time for details, in that respect Flanagan seems to be running more on autopilot cinematically and aesthetically, but the man is skilled enough to still deliver a fascinating and atmospheric end product. 4*

Het begon nog veelbelovend als een soort anthologieserie, met vage rode draad. Nu moet ik toch stilaan beginnen concluderen dat deze serie vooral pijnlijk oninteressant is en op geen enkel moment eng of boeiend. Een zoveelste gemiste kans in het horrorgenre.

It started promisingly as a kind of anthology series, with vague threads. Now I have to start to conclude that this series is mainly painfully uninteresting and at no point scary or fascinating. Yet another missed opportunity in the horror genre.
