Melodrama from the hell of the Wild West

The six-part The English was written by Hugo Blick (Black Earth Rising) and you could call it an ode to the westerns of Sergio Leone. Not only is the soundtrack related, there are also cinematic references. For example, the series was filmed in Spain. The English is about the friendship between Lady Cornelia Locke (Emily Blunt, also executive producer) and Eli Whipp (Chaske Spencer). Blunt - allergic to horses! - plays a strong role. The same goes for Spencer, who brings the stoic charisma of Clint Eastwood to his role.

The English offers an original look at the history of the United States. In a complex and sometimes messy scenario, a story unfolds about the harsh and lawless conditions in the US around 1890. The fact that The English cannot match its classic examples has to do with the number of characters that are introduced and the confusing story. Despite the shots of the beautiful landscape shot in overwhelming afternoon light.
