Melodrama from the hell of the Wild West
The six-part The English was written by Hugo Blick (Black Earth Rising) and you could call it an ode to the westerns of Sergio Leone. Not only is the soundtrack related, there are also cinematic references. For example, the series was filmed in Spain. The English is about the friendship between Lady Cornelia Locke (Emily Blunt, also executive producer) and Eli Whipp (Chaske Spencer). Blunt - allergic to horses! - plays a strong role. The same goes for Spencer, who brings the stoic charisma of Clint Eastwood to his role.
