Weakest season to date, although this remains a very strong series. The storylines and private concerns of the British royal family are a little less catchy this time and sometimes a little too obvious, especially when it comes to Princess Diana. Perhaps the years highlighted here were simply less interesting, also in terms of political developments. In any case, the new actors are doing an excellent job, with Imelda Staunton and Jonathan Pryce especially great as queen and prince respectively.

New season, new cast. Staunton is a decent Queen. Pryce is strong as Prince Philip, Debicki is a lesser Diana than Corrin, but still very convincing. West doesn't look like Charles at all, but he does act well and at some point it doesn't matter how similar he is now.

Furthermore, this season is mainly about (the dissolution of) the marriage of Diana and Charles, less about Elizabeth. The most interesting moment regarding that marriage is in the ninth episode, the autopsy of the relationship, which is somewhat reminiscent of the movie Before Midnight, but with a reverse course. Most interesting episode was about Al Fayed.

I feel that this season has some less pronounced strong moments, but also not many weaknesses, so I end up with 3 *.

Indeed the weakest season to date, although it still comes out on the same score as season 3. The cast is a bit hit and miss in terms of resemblance to their characters (Dominic West in particular takes some getting used to after Josh O'Connor), but still performs almost everyone again very solid. It took me longer to sit out the season, so I can't say I found everything equally interesting. As soon as the divorce between Diana and Charles starts to take shape - in the last episodes - things will get a lot more interesting. As far as I'm concerned, the level of the first two seasons is no longer reached, but it remains a good series that is still rock solid in terms of decoration.

3.5*
