The Calling (2022)

Israeli-German actor Jeff Wilbusch (Bad Banks, Unorthodox, The Little Drummer Girl) plays detective Avri Avraham in The Calling and does so with verve; a bit awkward, driven and with a lot of chemistry with fellow detective Janine Harris (Juliana Canfield - Succession). Avrahem is Jewish religious, intuitive and has a sixth sense, which gives him an air of mystery. Juliana Canfield gives a subtle twist to her role as his ambitious student, providing a good balance - both feet on the ground.

Conceived by the extremely productive David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies, The Lincoln Lawyer) and produced by Barry Levinson (City on a Hill, Dopesick), among others, it immediately becomes clear that The Calling has class. And that class is lived up to. The first four episodes revolve around a teenage missing person case. The second half of The Calling revolves around a crime involving a childcare center. Where all storylines are usually mixed up, here the plots are neatly told chronologically. Considering the many characters that are introduced, this is not an unnecessary luxury.

The detective team has a fresh interaction, the storylines are excellent and the two plots are more than sufficient. This makes The Calling a moody thriller for fans of 7 Seconds (also with Michael Mosley) or the American version of The Killing.
