The Alienist plot

Set in the year 1896, The Alienist follows eccentric psychologist Laszlo Kreizler, who must solve a series of gruesome murders of young male prostitutes. He gets help from John Moore, an illustrator for the newspaper, and Sara Howard, a young woman aspiring to become New York's first female detective. The Alienist is an adaptation of Caleb Carr's book.

Sfeervolle serie die de spanningsboog en mysterie tot en met de laatste minuut weet vast te houden. Gehele cast levert goed werk en de productie is gewoon hoogstaand. Enige wat even vreemd overkwam was dat in aflevering vijf bleek dat er al dik vier maanden voorbij waren sinds de eerste aflevering. Klein dingetje.

Atmospheric series that manages to maintain the tension and mystery until the last minute. Entire cast does a good job and the production is simply top notch.

The only thing that came across as strange was that in episode five it turned out that more than four months had passed since the first episode. Little thing.

Na de prima eerste aflevering is het even inkomen, één en ander verloopt dan wat traag en statisch, maar vervolgens ontpopt deze visueel mooi in beeld gebrachte, fraai gespeelde tiendelige reeks zich tot een spannende, intrigerende serie. De eersteklas cast helpt flink, met daarin heel wat gezichten die we lang niet meer gezien hebben, zoals bijrollen van Sean Young en Michael Ironside. Altijd leuk. Naar het einde toe is de rek er wel een beetje uit en het geheel verdient een wat spannender climax, maar al met al redelijk geslaagd. Gebaseerd op het gelijknamige boek van Caleb Carr, dat ook een vervolg heeft, The Angel Of Darkness. Dus...

After the excellent first episode, it's time to get in, things go a bit slow and static, but then this visually beautifully portrayed, beautifully played ten-part series turns into an exciting, intriguing series. The top-notch cast helps a lot, including a lot of faces we haven't seen in a long time, such as supporting roles from Sean Young and Michael Ironside. Always fun. Towards the end the stretch is a bit off and the whole deserves a more exciting climax, but all in all, quite successful.
