Riget plot

Riget is Denmark's most technologically advanced hospital, a triumph of modern science. However, through a series of mysterious events, the employees gradually lose their firm faith in rational explanations. For example, all kinds of voices are heard and the fetus of one of the doctors is growing much faster than it should.

Anyone who will soon have to undergo a medical procedure should avoid this hospital series. It involves medical malpractice and unhealthy rivalry between doctors. The title (“the empire”) sounds something like “ri-je”. It takes place at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen. It is a combination of drama and horror with supernatural elements.

Camera and editing techniques are used to suggest the presence of a ghost. A green color filter indicates the arrival of a demon. The most terrifying, however, are not the supernatural creatures, but the doctors who put their own careers above the well-being of the patients. Helmer is a Swedish surgeon who believes himself superior to his Danish colleagues. Krogshøj stands up to him, but he has ethically objectionable ideas. A wonderful character is Sigrid Drusse, a hypochondriac or a simulant who comes into contact with spirits.

Two actors with Down syndrome provide commentary like a Greek choir. At the end of each episode, director Lars von Trier provides a short reflection.

Lars von Trier, enfant terrible first class, made a hell of a supernaturally surreal show, packed with oddities, satire on the medical world, Freemason rituals in the basement, Udo Kier and a hefty layer of body horror on top.
