Quarry plot

Quarry tells the story of Mac Conway (Logan Marshall-Green), a Marine who returns to Memphis from Vietnam in 1972, only to be shunned by his loved ones and demonized by the public. As he grapples with his experiences of the war, he is drawn into a network of murder and corruption that stretches the length of the Mississippi River.

Quarry season 1

Sweltering neo-noir in the spirit of crime writers like Elmore Leonard and George Pelecanos. In terms of atmosphere and style, it's okay - with beautifully stylized action scenes, musical interludes to die for and a detailed seventies vibe - but for some reason the series didn't grab me. For a crime drama, it remains a tad well-behaved and doesn't push the boundaries like Breaking Bad and Fargo once did. For a social-realistic drama about racial tensions in the aftermath of the Vietnam War, that brooding context remains something in the background rather than having much influence on the events of the series. It is also all just a bit too implausible and far-fetched to do justice to that historical layer. The series is also sold as a completed miniseries, but I still have the idea that several storylines and side characters remain undeveloped. (Although fortunately the series doesn't end with an unsatisfactory cliffhanger!) The biggest find of this series is Buddy (Damon Herriman) as the queer eccentric. In fact, he stole my heart from the moment he was introduced when he was lip-syncing a Spanish kitsch song in his underpants.
