About the cold war of family life, with all its dormant desires and mutual frustrations built up over the years. In four separate episodes, different phases of life are told from the life of the stoic Olive Kitteridge (Francis McDormand), who tries to cope with the dark sides of life with grumpiness and rudeness. It is precisely this maladjustment that makes her a sympathetic character to me, because she openly opposes the petty bourgeoisie that others project on her. She chooses her own path and sometimes pays a price for it. How different is her loving husband (Richard Jenkins), who then clings to an irritating positivism and love for people, a survival strategy from which he draws his life energy. These two radically different visions of life clash of course, but at the same time therein lies the strength of the series: how the grumpy madam and the indestructible positivo attract and repel each other, while over the years they also continue to feel a deep kind of affection and loyalty.

Olive Kitteridge, released almost 10 years ago, had been on my watch list for a long time. Frances McDormand (Nomadland, Fargo) - with Tom Hanks also executive producer - plays Olive Kitteridge. Richard Jenkins (Dahmer, Six Feet Under) her husband. The actors, in the supporting roles we see for example Jesse Plemons, carry the series here. The complex characters, together with the fantastic game play and the lively and compact scenario, make an award-winning combination.

Olive Kitteridge's life story isn't necessarily an uplifting viewing experience. The contrast with the lovely surroundings could hardly be greater. Everything that can pass by in a human life - and especially woe - is condensed into four episodes of less than an hour. Yet Olive Kitteridge never gets top-heavy. A credit to screenwriter Jane Anderson who skilfully adapted Elisabeth Strout's Pulitzer Prize-winning book. The subtly lived and sometimes funny sarcasm provides a certain lightness. While perhaps not a classic, Olive Kitteridge is a wonderful little family chronicle.
