Decent series from Flanagan. The pseudo-philosophical posturing, which was mainly expressed in endless monologues, was sometimes a bit too much of a good thing, and disturbed the balance a bit. And some elements made me frown. But all in all, I watched this series in a fairly short time, and quite enjoyed it.

First of all, the acting was definitely up to par, with Hamish Linklater as the charismatic, young, new priest "Father Paul" leading the way. This man has a convincing (physical) presence, and his way of intonation reminded me, funnily enough, of John Malkovich. Let that just be an actor I hold pretty highly.

The story, and especially the build-up in the first episodes, also captivated me. A few characters came out right away, such as drunk Joe Collie, who I felt more and more sorry for until his untimely death, and Riley's father, portrayed by regular Flanagan actor Henry Thomas, who clearly struggled. with big themes like Love and Guilt.

The final final left something to be desired, the battle between Good and Evil remained somewhat in the dark. Symbolically enough in this series, and also a lot of - of course - religious references, quotes and songs. The camera work was good, I did recognize some tricks that were also used in Flanagan's Haunting series. A minus point for me was the angel. That one looked a bit laughable at times, and he wasn't really needed in such a prominent role (on screen, I mean) for the story.

Tight 3.5 stars

And another excellent series from director Mike Flanagan, who is now beginning to emerge as a master of the horror genre, both in film and television work. He takes plenty of time to build things up and set up the characters, but this is done in a very compelling and captivating way. The voltage is then handsomely increased to the boiling point. It's a shame that the climax is a bit disappointing in the end. Still, this is an excellent series of episodes, with many familiar faces from Flanagan's previous two series.

Eighty percent of the series consists of excruciatingly long, terribly boring dialogue. Because I still wanted to know how the story would end, I fast-forwarded most of it from episode three. Hamish Linklater is a powerless actor with a good face.
