Watched 3rd episode. This is about the raid on August 17, 1943 to Regensburg/Schweinfurt, the deepest penetration over Nazi Germany by the 8th US Air Force at that time.

That attack was afterwards considered a failure; 60 B-17s were lost in total, 600 men. In addition, dozens of B17s that could subsequently be written off. After this attack, another attack on Schweinfurt followed only 2 months later; result once again disastrous for the Americans.

At that time, the escort fighters had a range as far as the Dutch/Belgian-German border; It was not until February/March 1944 that the Americans received an escort fighter (P51 Mustang) that could escort the B17s and B24s to, for example, Berlin.

Bombing during the day by large numbers of heavy bombers was in fact 'learning on the job', because this had never been applied before; this started on a very small scale in August 1942. Germany itself was attacked from January 1943.

During 1944, daytime bombing became effective - only after the German surrender in May 1945 was the reality made public piece by piece. Not during the war, from the point of view of Allied propaganda... Morale and public opinion had to be kept militant...

So it was definitely not as heroic as it is made out to be.

A highly romanticized series about the bombers of the Second World War. The action scenes seem good, but you don't get to see the ultimate consequences of attacks and that is a shame. This series is too sappy and doesn't give the feeling that you are in the middle of a war like Band of Brothers or The Pacific. It's all not exciting enough.

I have now seen all episodes of Masters of the Air. My conclusion: Too sappy (too romanticized) with soulless characters without any depth. Including the endless slow dialogue(s) about absolutely nothing. Well... Perhaps to buy time, to be able to deliver extra episodes, by appointment from streaming service Apple. In this thread it has been stated several times that you should not 'link' this series to: Band of Brothers. But since the same creator of Masters of the air frequently makes this link, in almost every marketing campaign: "The producers of Band of Brothers".

So there is actually a link with Band of Brothers. It is almost abject to say that Masters of the air could never score as well because it largely takes place in the air compared to the ground, as can be read in several responses. To give an example: Das Boot, by another director years before, proves the opposite in the water, with a field of view that is just as limited as in the air in terms of warfare. In my opinion, the series Masters of the air coupled with the almost endless budget is not worth watching.
