Luther plot

For Inspector John Luther, solving crimes is not work. It's a calling. Luther is a brilliant detective, who keeps his own laws and rules and regularly amazes his colleagues with his keen insight. With full dedication he takes on the psychological duel with psychopaths, murderers... and the demons that dwell within himself. For Luther has a troubled mind. At times he is friendly and vulnerable, at other times tough and even violent. Given the latter, some wonder whether he is not primarily driven by an urge to self-destruct. But the only person Luther talks to about such matters is Alice, the beautiful murderess with whom, to his surprise, he feels a kind of connection...

Watched it in one weekend, what a nice discovery. Idris Elba has already proven himself in Hollywood, but he is nowhere as good as in his role as DCI Luther. The great thing about this series is that Luther himself not only goes outside the box, but that the series itself also dares to come out surprisingly. They are not classic 'who done it' episodes and they definitely don't always end well. Very refreshing.

The only downside for me in this season is the character Alice, played by Ruth Wilson. This character is a bit too forced in every episode and sometimes takes the momentum out of it a bit too much. Wilson plays the part very well.

British crime (drama) that tried (and tries, because s5 has yet to start) something new, which can be appreciated in itself. According to creator Neil Cross, it is a mix of Sherlock Holmes and Columbo (Imdb: "...intelligence and ability to solve crimes from Holmes ...introverted detective formula from Columbo."). I have not been able to discover the latter, this is far from "introverted".

Things are usually quite gruesome and the idea of leaving the 1st killer elusive right away and even acting as sidekick of Luther is quite original. It somehow reminds me of graphic novels and comics like Superman, where the central hero has his Achilles' heel/problems and has regular face-to-face interactions with the bad guys. He is overly capable, also just like a superhero. The emotionally intended outbursts of anger come across as very forced. Over-the-top is what "Luther" as a whole is exactly. That can sometimes turn out nice, but unfortunately this didn't do much for me.

Somewhere between 2 and 2.5 stars, so I'll make it 2.5* for this 1st season.
