Lou Grant plot

Lou Grant has been a journalist for years and finally gets his big chance. After many years working on television in Minneapolis, he takes a job on the local editorial board of the Los Angeles Tribune. However, the newspaper is entirely under the management of its owner Margaret Pynchon. Especially Lou Grant can feel that. Hardly a day goes by without bumping into the stubborn lady, but Grant usually gets his way. Together with his team, he manages to make the Los Angeles Tribune one of the most successful newspapers in the city.

This is an exceptional example of a spin-off that is better than the original series. Lou Grant started out as a side character in the sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show, but in this drama series he really comes to fruition. He has lost weight and is put in charge of the city section of the LA Tribune, a fictional daily newspaper. Sometimes it clashes between him and publisher Mrs. Pynchon, but ultimately they have the same goal: to publish a quality newspaper every day.

The editorial board is hotly debated about the content and layout of the newspaper. There are conflicts between employees, interference from advertisers, legal and ethical issues. Lou strives for an objective style and wants information to be thoroughly checked, but he also knows the pressure to get ahead of the competition with a first.

Joe Rossi and Billie Newman do investigative journalism. They want to expose the truth. Rossi makes blunders, but can get stuck into a subject. Billie doesn't come in until the fourth episode, but does so like a whirlwind. The actors actually worked at a newspaper to prepare their roles.

Some episodes are inspired by real-life research or current topics in the 1970s. There are nods to Watergate and Rupert Murdoch. Daring subjects are discussed: corruption in politics, abuses in psychiatry, neo-Nazis, sports fraud, nuclear energy... Outdoor shots show different environments in Los Angeles: unsafe neighbourhoods, ethnic groups, rich and poor…

They are never simplistic stories of good versus evil. It is an intelligent, nuanced look at complex social issues. Anyone interested in journalism should check out this series. Favorite Episodes: 4, 5, 8, 10
