Foundation plot

Hari Seldon, a mathematician, uses a new science called psychohistory to predict the end of the current Galactic Empire. He predicts that the time between this Galactic Empire and the next will be 30,000 years. To prevent this, a group of exiles embark on a monumental journey to save humanity and rebuild civilization. They do all this during the course of the fall of the Galactic Empire.

De aankleding is prachtig. Ooit langgeleden heb de boeken gelezen. Prachtig, maar geen romantische verhaal. Dan dit. Sommige scenes zijn werkelijk tenenkrommend, stupide en kinderachtig. Het lijkt wel of ze het voor kinderen en volwassenen wilden maken. Veel romantiek met veel violen of iets dat daar voor moet doorgaan. Moeilijk kijkende acteurs. Soms B-kwaliteit. Vlees nog vis. Ik heb voor de goede orde 10 afleveringen uitgekeken terwijl ik ziek was. Het ziet er mooi uit. Afl. 10: Daar gebeurt iets, waardoor ik denk; die gasten halen het hele verhaal onderuit door domme fouten. Jammer van zo een leuk verhaal.

Then this.

Some scenes are really cringe-inducing, stupid and childish. It seems they wanted to make it for children and adults. A lot of romance with a lot of violins or something that has to pass for that. Difficult looking actors. Sometimes B quality. Meat and fish. I watched 10 episodes for good measure while I was sick. It looks nice.

ep. 10: Something happens there that makes me think; those guys ruin the whole story by making stupid mistakes. Shame about such a nice story.

De beelden zijn indrukwekkend, vooral de val van de lift bij Trantor. Inhoudelijk vindt ik de serie slecht. Er zijn scenes met interessante dialogen, maar door zwak acteer- en schrijfwerk komt het platonisch over en zijn scènes saai. Het geheel lijkt iets dat is gericht op jonge tieners. De romantiek komt uit de lucht gevallen (letterlijk bij de eerste ontmoeting worden opgewonden blikken uitgewisseld en bij aflevering 2 zijn ze opeens samen zonder verklaring, met de nodige knuffel- en zoen scenes). Ik erger mij ook aan het overdreven krachtige hoofdpersonage. Eerder wordt nog verteld dat het uniek is dat zij zich goed heeft kunnen ontwikkelen in wiskunde, terwijl haar thuisplaneet dit totaal niet toestaat. Later blijkt ze echter ook een chemicus, bioloog en professioneel survivalist. Het heeft 0 personage-opbouw en ontkracht bij-personages. Vooral dat laatste is ergelijk. Ik heb het gevoel dat de bijrollen er alleen maar zijn om fouten te maken, die de hoofdrol vervolgens kan verbeteren (zoals in de scene waarin een boring wordt geoefend).

The images are impressive, especially the fall from the elevator at Trantor. I think the series is bad in terms of content. There are scenes with interesting dialogues, but due to weak acting and writing it comes across as platonic and scenes are boring. The whole thing seems like something aimed at young teens. The romance comes out of the blue (literally at the first meeting excited glances are exchanged and at episode 2 they are suddenly together without explanation, with the necessary hug and kiss scenes).

I am also annoyed by the overly powerful main character. Earlier it is said that it is unique that she has been able to develop well in mathematics, while her home planet does not allow this at all. Later, however, she also turns out to be a chemist, biologist and professional survivalist. It has 0 character build and negated side characters.

The latter is especially bad. I feel like the supporting actors are just there to make mistakes, which the lead can then improve upon (like in the drilling practice scene).

Ik heb de boeken niet gelezen, maar begrijp wel waarom lezers in mijn omgeving zo enthousiast zijn. Het Romeinse Rijk-achtige verval van het Galactic Imperium met een vleugje wetenschap is wat dat betreft een heerlijke inspiratiebron. De werelden zien er daarnaast - zeker voor een serie - belachelijk goed uit. Alleen het schrijf- en acteerwerk is ontzettend flets. Soms tenenkrommend infantiel zelfs. Daardoor heb ik S1 uiteindelijk met frisse tegenzin uitgekeken. Foundation heeft zeker potentie, maar het moet wel beter om iets langdurigs te stichten. 3,0 * Redelijke fundering gelegd

I have not read the books, but I understand why readers in my area are so enthusiastic. The Roman Empire-like decline of the Galactic Empire with a touch of science is a wonderful source of inspiration in that regard. The worlds also look ridiculously good - especially for a series. Only the writing and acting are incredibly dull. Sometimes cringingly infantile even. As a result, I ended up watching S1 with fresh reluctance. Foundation certainly has potential, but it needs to be better to establish something long-lasting.
