Regina Haywood is a newly promoted police chief in East New York, an impoverished working-class neighborhood on the eastern edge of Brooklyn. She leads a diverse group of agents and detectives, some of whom are reluctant to accept her creative methods of serving and protecting. in the midst of social unrest and the first signs of gentrification, she tries to hold her own.

Wat ER is voor de ziekenhuisseries, is Hill Street Blues voor de politieseries; iconische televisie. Het 21-delige East New York is een moderne variant op Hill Street Blues (1981 t/m 1987). Naast een inkijkje in de privélevens van de agenten van het 74th Precinct, kent elke aflevering een nieuwe misdaad of gebeurtenis. Deze eenmalige verhaallijntjes komen niet optimaal uit de verf en passen nauwelijks in de 40 beschikbare minuten. Dieptepunt is aflevering vijf - over een beruchte ontsnapte gevangene - die met grote stappen en lange halen als een nachtkaars uitgaat. East New York oogt formulaïsch en braaf, ondanks de uitstekende hoofdrol van Amanda Warren (Dickinson, The Leftovers). In tegenstelling tot veteraan Jimmy Smits (Sons of Anarchy, NYPD Blue), die houterig en stijfjes acteert. De overige cast acteert redelijk tot goed, en de karakters zijn voldoende interessant. Het geheel maakt nu en dan een bijna toneelmatige indruk, inclusief bordkartonnen kantoordecors. De nerveuze en rappende openingssoundtrack moet actualiteit en frisheid uitstralen, maar zorgt vooral voor irritatie. Hoewel het wiel niet opnieuw wordt uitgevonden, is East New York niet per se slecht, maar de potentie lijkt onvoldoende benut. Neemt niet weg dat liefhebbers van Amerikaanse politieseries hier wellicht toch iets van hun gading vinden.

What ER is to the hospital series, Hill Street Blues is to the police series; iconic television. The 21-piece East New York is a modern variation on Hill Street Blues (1981 to 1987). In addition to providing a glimpse into the private lives of the officers of the 74th Precinct, each episode features a new crime or event. These one-off storylines do not come out optimally and hardly fit into the 40 available minutes. The low point is episode five - about a notorious escaped prisoner - which fizzles out with long strides and long strokes.

East New York looks formulaic and well-behaved, despite the excellent lead role of Amanda Warren (Dickinson, The Leftovers). In contrast to veteran Jimmy Smits (Sons of Anarchy, NYPD Blue), who acts stiffly and stiffly. The remaining cast performs reasonably to well, and the characters are interesting enough.

The whole now and then makes an almost stagey impression, including cardboard office decors. The nervous and rapping opening soundtrack should radiate topicality and freshness, but above all it causes irritation. While not reinventing the wheel, East New York isn't necessarily bad, but its potential seems underutilized. Nevertheless, fans of American police series may find something to their liking here.
