I live in Vienna, where you are thrown to death with everything that has to do with Sisi. Interestingly enough, the Austrians I know don't seem very interested in this series. My direct colleague says that this series does the same as Romy Schneider's Sissi films: projecting the current zeitgeist onto Sisi's life. I can relate to that. Franz Josef is portrayed as a pacifist who tries to bring his country into modernity with a train project. In reality, he rashly and wholeheartedly plunged into wars and chose the carriage over the train. But if he were portrayed as such in this series, he would probably be much less appealing to today's viewer and one might wonder what Sisi saw in him. The real Sisi was also reportedly not as in love with him as the other way around, while in the series she is portrayed as super in love. Reality probably wouldn't sell very well here either. Finally, I didn't find anything about the emperor's brother actively plotting against him. But a series needs an antagonist.

This series therefore does not portray reality any more than the Sissi films, but is based on a story that is adapted to the current zeitgeist. That can still make for a good series. But the series strays so far from reality for me, especially in the plot surrounding the brother, that it bothers me a bit. Furthermore, the series has very few episodes, which makes the cliffhanger at the end feel very fast.

In terms of design, the series looks very nice in any case, no expense or effort has been spared. 2.5*.
