Derek plot
Derek has a childish and naive character that an inspector associates with autism, although he has never been tested for it. He is rejected by society because of his eccentricity, but his sympathy and enthusiasm make him very much loved by the elderly he cares for. His colleague Dougie is a very cynical handyman who is constantly arguing with the perverted good-for-nothing Kev. Meanwhile, nurse Hannah is constantly working overtime to keep the retirement home running smoothly, at the expense of her private life.

Beautiful series. In the beginning it takes some getting used to the role of Gervais - it seems a bit played out - but after that it is convincing. Nice other characters and overall Derek is a successful mix of comedy/drama. Now and then the jokes and situations are a bit too 'acted', but for the most part it is spot on.
Especially the episode with the funeral and the reunion with his father is good. Very moving and beautifully edited (both images/interviews and music by Coldplay in the background that occasionally swells). A beautiful ending, which actually makes season 2 a bit redundant.
The British can do that very well, such a mix of drama and comedy. Reminded me of a special episode of The Royle Family, which also strikes the right chord (but I don't believe that series is on TV meter yet).

Incredibly sympathetic series that evokes different emotions. Ricky Gervais as Derek is hilarious at times, while the last episode is quite emotional and tragic. Derek finds himself in quite a motley crew. The other characters, which are nice and stereotypical, also bring a smile to the face. The format with the short episodes of about twenty minutes works fine.
