Boots plot
1990. Cameron, a bullied, gay high school student, joins the Marine Corps with his straight best friend, Ray. A dangerous move, as being gay in the military means jail time or worse. As the two friends immerse themselves in Marine Corps boot camp, they join a platoon of young men on a harrowing journey of transformation.

I really enjoyed it. The contrast between the gay protagonist and the tough, male-dominated world he finds himself in. (Or perhaps the curious similarities, as some Marine Corps customs and traditions also have a queer tinge.) The excellent atmospheric depiction of the early nineties. Nostalgic music. Bright colors. Energetic training montages. Truly that perfect balance between lightheartedness and meaningful social realism. Funnily enough, this series was recommended to me by an Air Force captain, who isn't exactly known for his woke affinity. But even he thought it was a strong series for its realistic depiction of military training.
