Black Narcissus plot

Black Narcissus is based on Rumer Godden's bestselling novel, set in 1934, the final years of British rule in India. Ambitious Sister Clodagh and the nuns of Saint Faith go on a mission to Nepal in the Himalayas. There they are confronted with the dark secrets of the remote palace of Mopu, once known as the "House of the Women". Isolation, illness and conflict quickly take their toll on the community. While past and present clash, suppressed sexual desires between male powers and the pious sisters threaten to end in a fatal confrontation.

A book (1939), then a film (1947), and then a series (2020).

The series feels like an ode to the film, except that the story takes much longer to tell. Perhaps that's a good choice, as it felt better timed and measured to me.

The visuals of the setting and the sets are clearly a reference to the original in their picturesque, artificiality, but also much more beautiful, undoubtedly thanks to modern technology. The camerawork is somewhat tame, however; the rather eccentric and alienating way the original used extreme close-ups is not reflected.

But what stands out more in that comparison is a, how to put it politely, "minor flaw" in the cast. While the film builds to a climax in which the exceptionally beautiful Kathleen Byron undergoes a convincing decline, the series stalls with Franciosi, who fails to impress. On both counts.
