Atlantic Crossing plot
1940. Norway is occupied by Nazi Germany. Crown Princess Märtha and her children find refuge as political refugees in the White House. Her presence in Washington quickly influences President Roosevelt's views on the tragic events in Europe and ultimately changes the dynamics of American politics significantly. What begins as an affair turns into love and turmoil when Märtha publicly speaks out against Nazi tyranny. In an effort to fight for her country, she jeopardizes her marriage and convinces the president to support Norway - a first step in the struggle that will lead to the US joining the war.

The lead actors from Twin Peaks and The Bridge face off against each other. Kyle MacLachlan plays Franklin D. Roosevelt as a wise man who still has a taste for a young girl. The almost unrecognizable Sofia Helin plays Princess Märtha of Sweden, the older sister of Queen Astrid of Belgium. Märtha was married to Crown Prince Olaf of Norway, who aspired to a leadership position in the army.
The major historical events surrounding World War II are accurate, but there are also discrepancies. Märtha's political influence is exaggerated, and there is no evidence whatsoever of physical intimacy between her and Roosevelt. The castles shown are located in the Czech Republic, but Norwegian landscapes can also be seen. It is a fascinating series with top actors, but the historical aspect should be taken with a grain of salt.
