He often started his speeches with an easy-going "Well,.." and it characterizes the president-actor who, like no other predecessor, tried deftly to play his audience and win him over. He often succeeded, certainly in the first term of his presidency. After that it got a bit more difficult: the Iran-counter arms deliveries, the AIDS problem and a creeping form of dementia did not make it any easier for him. Yet Ronald Reagan is remembered as one of the most popular American leaders.
This and the entire build-up to his career is well and interestingly explained, as well as the importance of the first lady in political decisions. I did not know. Thought Nancy's performance didn't go beyond "To Love A Child"...
