The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes plot

In this British series, Jeremy Brett plays the role of Sherlock Holmes. The complete series consists of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes and two television films: The Sign of Four and The Hound of the Baskervilles. In each episode, the detective Sherlock Holmes faces a mystery. He is aided in this by his faithful friend Dr. Watson.

Briljante serie met een nog briljantere Brett. In vergelijking met deze authentieke serie, die de originele verhalen van Sir Arthur Conan Doyle nauwgezet volgt, zijn de nieuwere films met Downey jr. een lachertje. Een paar jaar geleden de hele serie in een box aangeschaft. Helaas ontbraken de Tv films (die wel in de Engelse box er bij zitten) en heb ik die nog los moeten kopen om alles compleet te hebben. Brett zet Holmes perfect neer, arrogant, zelf ingenomen en totaal geen respect voor adelijken, of staatsmensen. Wanneer hij ze beu is en genoeg gehoord heeft, wuift hij ze weg. Dit eerste seizoen heeft een aantal van de beste verhalen, zoals de Dancing Men en The solitary cyclist. Je hebt als kijker geen idee hoe het in elkaar steekt. Meteen in de eerste aflevering krijgen we de grote liefde van Holmes te zien: Irene Adler. Holmes geeft het niet graag toe, maar deze vrouw is de enige die echt indruk op hem weet te maken.

Brilliant series with an even more brilliant Brett. Compared to this authentic series, which closely follows Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories, the newer Downey Jr. films are a joke.

Bought the whole series in a box a few years ago. Unfortunately, the TV films (which are included in the English box) were missing and I had to buy them separately to have everything complete.

Brett portrays Holmes perfectly, arrogant, self-righteous and totally disrespectful to nobles, or statesmen. When he is tired of them and has heard enough, he waves them away.

This first season has some of the best stories, such as the Dancing Men and The solitary cyclist. As a viewer you have no idea how it works.

Immediately in the first episode we get to see Holmes' great love: Irene Adler. Holmes hates to admit it, but this woman is the only one who really impresses him.

Ik heb deze serie lang links laten liggen, maar mijn vader is er altijd groot fan van geweest. Daarom heb ik het toch maar eens een kans gegeven en het is me zeer goed bevallen. De lovende berichten over Jeremy Brett zijn volkomen terecht: hij is simpelweg de beste vertolker van Sherlock Holmes die ik tot nu toe gezien heb. Tijdens het lezen van een van de boeken van Arthur Conan Doyle, zie ik constant Brett voor me wanneer Holmes aan het woord is. Ook David Burke zet een aangename rol neer als zijn loyale vriend Dr. Watson. De serie oogt op het eerste gezicht ouderwets, maar het komt de sfeer uitermate goed van pas. De mysteries die in deze afleveringen onderzocht moeten worden zijn allemaal, zonder uitzondering, behoorlijk intrigerend en het wordt overtuigend op de kijker overgebracht. Er is ook zichtbaar veel aandacht besteed aan zaken als decors, kostuums en vormgeving. Had de sfeer uit de boeken nog beter benaderd kunnen worden? Ik denk het niet. 4*

I ignored this series for a long time, but my father has always been a big fan of it. That's why I gave it a chance and I really liked it. The praise for Jeremy Brett is completely justified: he is quite simply the best Sherlock Holmes interpreter I have ever seen. While reading one of Arthur Conan Doyle's books, I constantly picture Brett when Holmes is speaking. David Burke also plays a pleasing role as his loyal friend Dr. Watson. The series looks old-fashioned at first glance, but it serves the atmosphere extremely well. The mysteries to be explored in these episodes are all, without exception, quite intriguing and it is conveyed convincingly to the viewer. A lot of attention has also been paid to matters such as sets, costumes and design. Could the atmosphere from the books have been approached better? I do not think so.
