Wonderful crime series - who's the culprit? And seldom can that and/or the motive be guessed because at the very end some bizarre piece of news comes out that explains everything. The trick of 'the one you least expect it from is the perpetrator' does not often hold true.
Furthermore, a wonderfully cozy English country atmosphere with neat white garden fences, beautifully kept gardens and nice cottages. Dressing up is great in that regard. Have read that sometimes they had to wait days before turning because it always rained and they waited for a scarce sun to make it look nicer.
It's also nice that every episode has a theme, particular hobby or sport. From hunting to rowing, tennis, a reading club, gardening or (other) typically British things. The contrast between all that sweetness and the brutality of some murders is Midsomer Murders in full.
When John Nettles stopped playing the lead role, I thought the series went backwards a bit. He is Barnaby (and was getting used to the new chief inspector.) Good interaction with his young colleague.
PS the opening tune is fantastic with that special instrument (theremin).
