Mayor of Kingstown plot
Mayor of Kingstown is set in a small Michigan town where the only surviving and thriving industry is federal, state, and private prisons. The story follows the McClusky family, the rulers between the police, criminals, inmates, prison guards and politicians. Racism, corruption and inequality are the order of the day. The McClusky family makes an effort to bring order and justice to a town that has neither.

Busy boss, that Taylor Sheridan. He currently has three series in progress (also Yellowstone and 1883) and many more will follow soon. If the quality is maintained, I have no problem with that at all. Mayor Of Kingstown is in any case very worthwhile, if you like blunt violence and gloomy situations. All the typical Sheridan characteristics are present: a nasty, ominous atmosphere, laconic and seasoned main characters, pretentious dialogues and a lot of bombast. And oh yes, the main female protagonists are whores. Clearly more of a series for men than for women, that should be clear. At least I could do something with it. The tension is cleverly built up to the boiling point, with the last episodes acting as a beautiful triple finale. For now then, because season two has already been announced.

In Mayor of Kingston we watch a mix of prison drama and police thriller (think: We Own This City). The informal mayor Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner) tries to maintain the balance between local gangs, police, prison guards and prisoners in Mayor of Kingstown, a rather explosive cocktail. We don't have to count on much nuance in Mayor of Kingstown. You can see that in the dialogues, which vary in quality, but are often very strong. The storylines of High Dillon and Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone, 1883) are rock solid with great plot twists.
What is also striking is that almost all characters are unsympathetic, although McLusky gains sympathy as the 10-part series progresses. No strong female roles here, unless it is McLusky's mother (a role by Dianne Wiest). This world of Toni Sheridan is good or evil, men are simple or macho. Or both. But despite the sad, harsh and hopeless worldview that is outlined, Mayor of Kingstown captivates. Not least because of the excellent acting and the fine screenplay.
