I loved S1 by the Danish band Those Who Kill in 2011. It was the time of The Bridge, The Killing and Borgen, and probably the pinnacle of the Danish Noir. Those Who Kill had a particularly grim atmosphere and exceptional quality. It has always stayed with me. S2 followed in 2019 with a very different cast; Natalie Madueño (as Louise Bergstein) took over from Laura Bach. Now there's S3 with Madueño in the lead again. Together with Helle Fagralid (Karina), she forms the strong women's narrative. Men are increasingly playing a subordinate role in Scandinavian series. Unless they're mentally ill. The female power takes on a serial killer here. It will be announced almost immediately. TWK is therefore not whodunnit, but also not whydunnit, wheredunnit or howdunnit. It is a search for a known perpetrator to the viewer. The first episodes are exciting, grim and dark, and TWK reminds me of The Fall. Not a bad reference.

As with the simultaneously released The Chestnut Man, however, there is also a lot to criticize about TWK. The three chance encounters between profiler and killer 'in the wild' are implausible. The expectant looks between Karina and Louise are also confusing; Is this detective duo going to have a relationship? And there's quite a bit of silent play where we mainly look at musing.

On the other hand, I experience a lot of chemistry with protagonists Madueño and Fagralid. Natalie Madueño is an excellent actress who has built up a good track record with The Rain, Kriger and especially Amount/Follow The Money. For this reason, I think Those Who Kill is slightly better than The Chestnut Man, but not enough to reflect this in the star rating.

There are quite a few mistakes in the series.

Child is beaten immediately a red cheek a few hours later nothing to see. And often no gloves. Why does mother go to a hotel and leave her phone off, even though she often calls Johannes? And a psychologist who doesn't know how a child reacts??

Negatives

An interesting series in itself, but the plot rattles quite a bit. Most notable is a psychologist/profiler who walks around heavily depressed for 8 episodes; a great help for the police. Furthermore, many similarities with season 1: one-man actions by the police, telephones that happen to be switched off and that one car has a tracker. For the rest it looked pretty good.
