Columbo plot

Every criminal makes the mistake of underestimating Lieutenant Columbo. He's a police inspector with an old crumpled raincoat, a cigar butt and a ramshackle Peugeot 403. He looks like an incompetent bumbler. But with his politeness and his much talk about his wife, he wrests a confession from even the most cunning murderer.

From this season, Columbo starts to get really fun, although the previous seasons were quite entertaining as well. Here, however, our old raincoat with cigar and (cigar) dog in worn-out oldtimer Peugeot has become a shuffling anachronism in a (then) modern world, the contrast works really great. Also, Peter Falk seems to play with more humor, fun and finesse. Of course, the series relies heavily on the comedic note, but that's part of it. This is not a serious detective series. And not even a real detective (mystery), because the viewer immediately knows how the murder is in the pipeline.

Way back in the day (haha), when this first aired, I didn't get it. I didn't become acquainted with C. until the later seasons on 13th Street aired late at night (early morning), and I watched them several times. Eventually became addicted, bought the complete box and also watched the previous seasons.

This season's favorite is 'Murder, Smoke and Shadows' (a wink look at the Hollywood film world with a supporting/leading role for an enthusiastic Fisher Stevens - best known to me from 'Short Circuit, but happened to see it again yesterday in 'Factotum'), and 'Sex and the Married Detective as a close second (nice supporting/starring role by Lindsay Crouse).

Thick 4.0* for fun.
