Columbo plot

Every criminal makes the mistake of underestimating Lieutenant Columbo. He's a police inspector with an old crumpled raincoat, a cigar butt and a ramshackle Peugeot 403. He looks like an incompetent bumbler. But with his politeness and his much talk about his wife, he wrests a confession from even the most cunning murderer.

This police series broke with the traditional pattern by using the open book format. The killer was shown from the beginning. Then a cat-and-mouse game ensued between detective and offender, with an emphasis on psychology. There was a good balance between tension and humor.

Peter Falk will live on as the lieutenant with the rumpled trench coat, the rickety Peugeot and the slight Italian accent. He pretends to be dumber than he is, to give the suspect a false sense of security. Every time he makes a comment about his wife - a latent character. His basset hound appears for the first time in the first episode of this season. Another regular ingredient was that he returned and said, "Just one more question..." The question that followed was far more dangerous than any of the questions before.

The killer often has an interesting profession: conductor, theater actor, TV chef, sports coach, chess player or surgeon. Such a person plans and commits the near-perfect murder, but ends up falling into the trap. Afterwards, he sportingly admits his defeat: "That one detail..." Sometimes the killer could have gotten away with it by running away, by doing nothing or by continuing to deny. An additional asset are the guest roles of John Cassavetes, Ray Milland, John Williams, Leonard Nimoy, Martin Landau, Honor Blackman, Anne Baxter and Anne Francis, among others.

Favorite episodes: 1, 6, 7.

You know from the start what's going on but that doesn't take away from the tension and the fun, because there is always the ingenuity, the finesse of Columbo who, in his humble pushiness, playfulness and charm, captivates you from his first appearance to his triumphant smile at the end.
