ZombieLars plot

In the fictional city of Bekkebakken, adapting is the norm and everything that deviates from it is looked down upon. Lars is a twelve-year-old living unliving - or zombie - who tries to find his own way in the community where an extreme right-wing people's party is emerging and he feels the first butterflies in his stomach. Together with Anna (a ninja), Tess (a witch) and Robert (a 'normal' boy), Lars goes in search of their own identity.

ZombieLars season 1

A couple of concerned parents put me on the path to this Scandinavian gem. Whether it is completely pedagogically correct I dare not say, but it is well written and hooks into current events - about marginalization and identity - from an adolescent experience. And the zombie approach has been ingenious to portray a main character who feels misunderstood towards adults who test everything whether it is correct or desirable, but rarely listen to him. The storyline starts off a bit rough - Lars is thrown off a bus first, then off a school building - but ends up being pretty cute, with a blushing zombie boy and an invisible girl spinning around each other. Perhaps the jokes are sometimes a bit bland and childish, but that is more than made up for by the strong adult characters. No ridiculous characters but vulnerable and imperfect people, for whom their small sins and hateful behavior can sometimes have major consequences. A ten-year-old Kaj had enjoyed it, I think.
