Trying is a nice British comedy about the couple Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) who want to have children. The series focuses on the rather curious procedure to qualify for adoption. For the adoption committee, Jason and Nikki have to seem like the perfect parents. And that happily goes wrong.

Trying is especially notable for the chemistry between the protagonists and the amount of awkward moments in everyday situations. The humor is not too thick on top of it but is mainly in the clumsiness of Jason and Nikki and their family. I see similarities with Catastrophe and Breeders, but Trying can't quite match that. Due to the depth of the themes - Nikki has doubts about her education level, for example - Trying remains fresh and infectiously optimistic.
